Enjoy that dial tone buddy she's too embarrassed now to answer.]

but it's fine he sees you've left him on read...thanks...
So, a few hours later, he'll just TEXT YOU AGAIN]
Soo...do you have anything to report to me? I feel like we don't talk as much anymore.
no subject
That's partly out of design. I know you don't approve of the choices I'm making here. Forcing you to think of them won't get us anywhere.
But we've met some of the same people, I think. For now, the android Connor seems harmless. We can keep an eye on him but I don't think he'll pose a problem.
no subject
[Not that she's wrong but that's not...what he was asking about. Of course he doesn't want to know about her sexual adventures and whatever else she's gone and done in the name of upholding her 'duty' here but to put it like that? Kind of hurts.]
No, I don't think he will either. He seems okay, just dated.
no subject
[And honestly, she lies to him enough as it is, adding yet another thing to hide from him to the list is enough to make her want to just lay down and die.]
no subject
But you've never really been the stop and smell the roses type, have you?
[Which is, y'know, great, because now he's totally second guessing ever having picked a few flowers to give to her in the first place.]
no subject
He's acting like she has no heart, like she hasn't shown it to him, but... No, that's unfair. She shouldn't be unhappy that she's putting a wall between them and it's working.]
2B, signing off.

Go robots, you're so good at feelings...]
ACTION
Yeah, he fucked up and he knows it, which is why he's in a panic, footsteps heavy as he hunts her down. Hopefully she hasn't left yet and he'll catch her somewhere in the vicinity.]

There's a lunar tear, the one she had gotten after going through all that trouble to find them for Emil, after finding his underground cave filled with them and deciding then that there really was something to the machines that had broken free of their murderous past. She holds it in her hand, looking down at it like she's trying to find some answer there in the petals, but in the end she begins to walk, tossing the flower aside like it means nothing.
It does. Of course it does. One last connection to a life she had wanted to cling to, a reminder of a sweet voice encouraging her to think of cute things, a lost boy longing for memories...
But there is no room for emotions, and the flower falls to the dirty street and stays there.]
no subject
But that's neither here nor there, and coming across the discarded lunar tear has him frowning as he plucks it from the street. They were special flowers, for a number of reasons, and if 2B had tossed it aside...
God, why was he such an idiot?
It's a few blocks north of the flower that he manages to finally catch sight of her, slowing his gait as he calls out to her, hoping to catch her attention.]
Hey, 2B! Wait up!
no subject
It comes in very useful when she turns to look at 9S, expression neutral.]
What is it?
no subject
You dropped your flower, 2B.
[He's not going to say she tossed it. He won't point that out.]
no subject
[Her hands remain at her side and she's not quite looking at him now, just in his direction. She had been foolish to try to reach out to him, to show him a side of herself on the ship that was soft, that cared. It would be easier to let him down if he never thought she had the side to herself that did stop to smell the flowers, to escort lost robots, to protect a parade.
To collect stamps.
To go on dates.
All of those concessions feel like mistakes now.]
no subject
[He's taking another step, closing the distance between them, and before she can protest he's tucking it back behind her ear, under her hairband to keep it in place. The smile he offers is an apologetic one that reaches his eyes, even if she can't see them.]
I said something stupid and I didn't...mean it the way you've clearly taken it. So, I'm sorry.
no subject
It would be easier if that were true.]
Your apology is unnecessary. You yourself reminded me that emotions are prohibited.
no subject
[The smile quickly drops from his face as he pulls his hands back, letting them drop to his sides.]
Are you going to throw the gift I have for you back in my face too because it's unnecessary?
[It's tucked away in his little satchel, out of sight, but it's still there.]
no subject
[Another lie, in a way. Of course she would never throw away anything he took the time to find for her, something he'd chosen while thinking of her. Gifts might be troublesome in general but something from 9S would be cherished, kept safe for as long as she could keep it safe.
It's just that now might not be the best time to try.
rip.]
You made your feelings known, 9S. No further discussion about our roles or our personal lives is wanted or necessary, I understand. You didn't need to come here to tell me that.
no subject
[She can't be listening to him. There's no way. He's...stressed out. Increasingly so. Low-key panicked even. Somehow everything is spiraling so fast and he doesn't know how to make it stop.
There's fear then, suddenly, that she's going to walk away. That she's going to leave and that's...he can't let that happen. There isn't much distance between them as he moves to wrap his arms around her middle, head dipped as gloved fingers cling to the fabric of her dress. How had things turned so sour so quick?]
...Just what on earth do you think my feelings are, 2B? You're my partner. Why wouldn't I want to hear about what's going on in your life or if you've found something new and exciting? I want to share that experience with you, don't you get it?
[His grip tightens, forehead now pressed against her chest. Ah...he feels terrible. What an awful, terrible feeling this is.]
Why do you keep pushing me away or put words in my mouth when I'm just trying to close the gap? Maybe I'm doing a lousy job of it...I'm doing a lousy job of everything lately...
no subject
His eagerness to touch her, to hold her, she had used the fact that he was inebriated to explain all of that away.
Now, though, he puts his arms around her not in a hug but in what feels like the grip of someone who expects she'll be pulled out of his grasp if he doesn't hold on, like-]
Oh.
[The sound is punched out of her, more painful than any of the attacks landed on her by Machine or even other androids. He's afraid of the same thing she is. They're both afraid to lose each other.
Slowly, her arms come up to settle around his shoulders, warm and sure as she dips her head down to press her lips pensively to the top of his head. She doesn't push him away or admonish him his feelings, which is probably a step in the right direction, but she knows she needs to say something or this will only deteriorate farther.]
I-
[But there are rules in this place, fraternization between Submissives is frowned upon, and she's lived in the Down long enough for it to not be secret. All it will take is a close look to see that 9S has the same mark down his neck as she does, and that makes this exchange unwise to have in public. Slowly, she pulls back, but as she does she takes his hands, squeezing them almost lovingly in her own.]
This isn't the place to talk about this. Come inside with me.
no subject
It shouldn't be a surprise that he's afraid to lose her and he's not sure how he can make it any clearer without forcing a connection and letting her see just exactly how he feels on the inside. Sure, 9S had a lot of positive traits but his personality type came with a few drawbacks as well - jealousy, neurotic tendencies, insecurity. They're traits that have been given more time to grow in this environment than they would've back under YoRHa's watchful eye, and unfortunately they're traits that have been expressing themselves in unsavory ways. She's in tune with him enough to know that he's on the brink of a breakdown or at least cracking juuust a little further, and the sound she makes has him halting whatever spiraling train of thought he was getting himself caught in.
She pulls back and he can feel himself panicking, but that fear is instantly quelled by her taking his hands in hers. It's the little things to him that matter, and while a gesture like this may not mean much to others, to 9S it's monumental. No, the middle of a grimy street isn't the place to talk, but the offer she follows up with is something he finds himself nodding to without fuss - not that he has a reason to, at least over that.]
...Okay.
[The squeeze is returned, gloved fingers holding gloved fingers. Maybe he'd get to touch her actual fingers again with his bare ones, if he were lucky.]
spoilers
She can't tell him that she's dead by A2's hand, but he needs to know that she never thought she would have the chance to meet a human. She can't tell him about the pain and fear that comes with losing him so many times, but he can't go on thinking she doesn't care about him.
As they walk her fingers tighten around his, almost possessive, certainly protective, and when she ushers him into her building she puts a hand on his shoulder to guide him in first.]
You remember what floor it was on, don't you?
Re: spoilers
[Of course he remembers. Everything to do with 2B is committed to memory - he is her partner, after all. 9S finds himself walking toward her building in silence, letting the sound of their matched footsteps fill his ears. Her fingers are still squeezing his, and he returns the gesture, not wanting to let go and yet he isn't sure where their encounter is going to end up. Every step feels like another that's only going to put further distance between them. He'd feel queasy, if he were able to.
When her hand moves to the shoulder he longs again for her hand, but doesn't put up a fuss. In they go as he makes a beeline toward the elevator, pressing the button only to wait for the telltale ding.]
no subject
Well. They aren't under the orders of YoRHa anymore.
Stepping up behind him, she puts both hands on his shoulders to keep him facing away from her. She'll be better able to do this if he can't look at her at all, if she can't see his expressive face and the pain she can see in it even with it half covered in his visor.]
I'm never sure what to say to you, 9S. Even before coming here, I've been... careful about what I say. It never seems to be the right thing.
