[And he makes it known as he takes a step forward, leaning into her as he begins to lead her in following a simple box step. Each movement is aptly timed and easy to match by someone like her. It's not as if there's much space to really waltz around the place, and the lack of music does somewhat dampen the experience, but he fills the void with a light, pleasant hum of a simple melody. It's better than nothing.
It's after a few moments of this that he decides to be daring and take a risk, pulling back only to guide her into a twirl.]
I'm no human dancer [He's always falling short in comparison in general, isn't he?] but I doubt I'm the worst either.
no subject
If she had pushed him away one more time she would have lost this chance, maybe for good with so many humans here to keep his interest. He seems to be less interested in them than she is, but she knows their programming as well as he does. There will always be a siren call to them, always a desire to see them smile.
But 9S isn't like her, and losing sight of that has almost cost her more than once. When he spins her out he surprises her, this new boldness something she isn't accustomed to with him, but even that is something she finds favorable.]
You do this better than the humans.
[Which might be shocking to hear from her, but it's a rare bit of open truth for him.]
They stumble a lot because they can't program the steps in like we do.
no subject
That said, he'll take the compliment.]
Thanks 2B.
[His cheeks are warm and pink from that alone, as he twirls her back his way and pulls her flush against him. It makes it a little awkward for him to lead, what with their height difference not exactly working in his favour, but clearly he must be doing something right.]
Even if some of them stumble, there are many who dance beautifully too.
no subject
She didn't really think 9S could be this bold, if she's honest with herself.]
I can't deny that.
[He's right, after all. The humans are beautiful even with their flaws, maybe even because of them. Not tarnished or lesser, but real instead of the synthetic perfection of herself and her partner.
Pulled in close again, she forgoes putting her hand on 9S' shoulder and puts her arm around him instead, dancing close in the way she learned from one of her human partners.]
Their ability to improvise is admirable too.
no subject
[Sure, 9S was clever and he could think outside the box more than most of his brethren, but that spark of creativity he had still paled in comparison to a human's innate ability to create and imagine.
They're close, bodies pressed together. He likes it. This is how it should be. Just the two of them like this. Suddenly, he decides to dip her, hand at the small of her back as he does so, face hovering close to her's. She's...a bit lighter than she used to be, which in some ways makes it easier to pull off such a move. He's still not sure how to feel about that.]
All I can manage is the illusion of improvisation.
no subject
This isn't a fight and 9S isn't her enemy. He's more than she can put into words and as she feels herself hanging in his arms she can't help the slight smile that curls her lips upwards. Her hand has shifted up to hold the side of his neck for her own attempt to keep upright, but even then she doesn't need to. He's strong enough to hold her, strong enough to do so many things.
She still worries, of course, and her thumb rubs a careful little circle against the soft skin of his neck.]
You don't fake anything you do, 9S. You're more authentic than most YoRHa units.
no subject
You sure you don't mean emotional?
[He's not sure if that's a good thing. It never really was, back under YoRHa's command. Flaunting his personality and all of its 'flaws' never sat well with the higher ups, his Operator, or even 2B sometimes it felt like. Unable to help himself he leans closer, until their foreheads are touching. Her smile is infectious and he finds his own lips tugging upward at their corners.]
All I know is that there's no reason to keep secrets from each other here. There shouldn't be anything 'classified' between us, don't you think?
[Of course he's a hypocrite while saying this. After all, he knows the fate of humanity...he just can't bear to tell her, not when their creators are running around amongst them.]
no subject
It's an odd position, but she can't help these moments where all her sorrow and hope for their future boils over into a need to touch, to hold, to show him he does matter. They're things she tried so hard to keep a handle on when they had the Bunker to return to, the Commander watching over them to keep 9S in line.
She has a freedom here that she never did before, one he'll never really see the depths of because she'll never tell him this is her very last chance, and even when he's calling attention to that very thing she can't be honest, not in the way he wants.
But she can give him something else.]
I meant what I said. Don't twist it into something negative.
no subject
C'mon 2B, I wasn't. Thanks for the compliment, I mean it.
[Gloved fingers find the back of her head as he continues to hold her. She's warm. They both are.]
You can be yourself around me, you know that, right?
no subject
9S is 9S and there is no substitute for him.]
You'll tell me if anyone hurts you, won't you? If they ask you to do something you don't want to.
[She's acted protectively towards him before but she's not sure if he's recognized it that way. Her hands holding his shoulders too tightly when she pulled him from danger, putting her body in front of his during an attack, and at the end when she had sent him from battle, cloaked herself so he couldn't find her and get himself hurt. She's done it so many times but always in ways that were so much less obvious than this, but this one time she just doesn't care.]
no subject
The closer she holds him the the tighter he feels the need to squeeze, enjoying the way her chin rests against his shoulder. If only they could stay this way.]
I'll tell you, but you have to promise to tell me too.
no subject
It's exactly why she should release him first, this opposing desire to what she feels is her prime directive, pleasing humans, but this is her partner. He's the one she's fought beside, died beside, protected. He's the one-
Better not to think about it. She can't, and so she simply turns her head just enough to feel his hair against her cheek and pretends this is good enough. It must be.
She will make it be.]
No one has hurt me. No one has done anything I don't want.
no subject
But this is fine. It's fine, right? He squeezes a bit tighter.
It'll be fine, as long as he doesn't have to let go.]
Good. If someone ever does they'll pay for it.
no subject
[An android is easy. They would die, immediately and painfully, by her hand. Even A2 might feel obligated to help, but 2B knows that if anyone hurts 9S she'll suffer with the need to get retribution on even a human, the humans she loves so much.
She would want to kill what she loves, because she loves 9S. She kills 9S. She isn't sure those emotions are all that separate anymore.]
no subject
[Her chin is still against his shoulder and the weight and light dig of the point of it is a small comfort he's fully indulging in. He's in the same boat, of course, in that if anyone hurt 2B, human or otherwise, he'd want to get revenge. If they were human it'd be trickier - he can't deliberately harm one himself...but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be above enlisting the help of someone who could on his behalf.
A hand rubs between her shoulders, the sensation meant to be soothing, reassuring. As needy as he is surely 2B is too, in her own way. They're cut from the same cloth, after all - they may be different products but the care they need should ultimately be the same.]
no subject
[It's in things like this that 2B knows she misses the mark when it comes to the emotional attachments she knows 9S wants. From him asking her to call him Nines to... well, everything, really, she holds herself back out of an ingrained fear of when she'll have to kill him.
She knows it will take work to find herself being the person 9S wants, knows that she's already failed more than once. She's tried to make it better but maybe it's time to try harder. Maybe there is something she can do to take away his doubts.
When his hand rubs her back she tenses slightly, but only because this gesture is unfamiliar. Her back is exposed thanks to the window cutout of her dress and his gloves are soft against her skin, and after a moment she sighs and relaxes against him again.]
You should think of something special for our... date. [It sounds so funny when it's coming from her, not natural like it does when 9S says it with his sunny, cheerful voice. She doesn't like it in her own low, placid tone, but this isn't about what she likes.] When I have the means for it, we can do whatever you want.
no subject
[There's a sudden coyness to his voice when he speaks, brow raising even though she can't see it. The expression shines through the tone that coats each syllable. This is probably the longest he's held her before (he's counted, in the past, don't @ him) and really he's creating a new record here.]
Sure that's a wise thing to do? Giving me alllll that power?
[He's teasing of course, but is delighted all the same that she brought up their date in the first place. It's still something he's dreaming about and it's not like he hasn't been thinking of something special to do for their little rendezvous...he's already made a list.
Because he's extra and of course he did.]
You know the point of our date is for me to spoil you, right?
no subject
[Which is a very 2B way of saying she wants to spoil him just as much, but it's only after it comes out, after she hears it in her own voice, that she realizes how cold she sounds no matter what she's trying to say to him.
With a soft sigh of annoyance at her own failing, she tries again.]
I want to spoil you too. You deserve it.
no subject
Well...in that case, how about this?
[He pulls back just enough so he can see her face better, still holding her as he shoots her a grin. This is good. This is progress. If he had a heart it'd be thrumming away in his chest. When he speaks next it's in a parody of pod 042's voice, complete with tinny autotune just because.]
Proposal: Unit 9S and Unit 2B will each spoil each other on their date. The event won't end until each Unit feels thoroughly spoilt.
no subject
He has no right to be this adorable.]
Mission accepted.
no subject
Confirmed - Unit 2B has accepted the mission.
[Her smile and his own silliness has him laughing then, the sound giving way how light he feels now compared to how he felt earlier. Their relationship has always been a bit of a rollercoaster - this place has just made it dip and soar in ways he hadn't thought possible.]
Sorry, sorry...I couldn't resist. [Really, he couldn't.] So, I know you're not into gifts but...I made you something. I can give it to you, right?
no subject
I'll accept it, but only this once.
[They can both probably tell that's a big lie.]
no subject
[Again, he couldn't help himself. He's pained to put even the slightest bit of distance between them, but he keeps one of her hands in his as he reaches around his back with the other, deftly popping the clasp of his satchel open to grab the little leather bound journal he'd gotten for her. Gingerly he holds it out for her to take, what's visible of his expression meek as he does so.]
Remember when we looked for Lunar Tears together with Emil? [Of course she does, what a stupid question.] Well...there are so many different flowers here, I thought you might like something like this. Lucrezia helped me press the ones in there that I found in the gardens around here. I tried to write under them what they were but my penmanship is pretty bad...so that part is kind of ugly.
[Ah...he's should probably get to the point, right?]
A-Anyway! Obviously there are more flowers to find than just those ones, so! Your mission is if you come across one you haven't seen before to press it and add it to the collection.
no subject
She needs both hands to lift the cover of the book and look inside, eager for a look at 9S' supposed terrible penmanship, the flowers he's pressed, this small thing he's done for her that's so much more than small.
This gesture means everything to her, something she will treasure the rest of her days of operation, and as gently as she can she traces the edge of one flower before she smiles once more at the handwriting underneath.]
I didn't think a YoRHa unit could be programmed with bad penmanship.
[She says this absently and with so much warmth it's got to be clear she finds this trait of his charming, and with a resolute nod she raises her head to look at him.]
Accepted, but under one condition. You have to help me find the appropriate flowers.
no subject
[They're paperless up at YoRHa. Full digital. He has a WPM score that's utterly disgusting but physically writing down something? Yeah, it's a little difficult.]
You got it. I mean, I bet you'd be pretty lousy finding them without my help, what with me being a Scanner and all.
[It'll be like finding Emil's Lunar Tears all over again.
