CHARACTER
NAME: 9S
CANON: NieR: Automata
CANON POINT: Ending B & CRAU from Duplicity
AGE: Literally 4. Appears to be of age physically and mentally.
BACKGROUND: Here

CRAU:

Duplicity is a city that consists of two wards if you will - the UP and DOWN - and the society is built on Dom/Sub dynamics along with a heavy emphasis on sex. Subs were kept to the Down and Doms the Up, the exception being Subs who had entered into contracts with Doms. The Down was very poor and slummy, the Up the exact opposite full of ritzy lights and indulgences. 9S was designated as a Sub and ended up immediately contracting A2 upon arrival. The two lived in an apartment in the Up and explored the two districts from there.

PERSONALITY:

9S is a YoRHa scanner type model android whose job is to collect intel and do reconnaissance. He was programmed to have a curious and eager personality, which has developed somewhat outside the norm of his fellow scanner units. 9S is chipper, kind, polite and is thirsty for knowledge, which leads him to stick his nose places he ought not to. He's too smart for his own good, quite literally, which the player finds out later on in the game. His specific scanner model is so effective that YoRHa has to eliminate them (including 9S) over and over when they find out too much. (AKA everything is a sham and their mission is effectively pointless.)

Emotions are prohibited but that doesn't stop 9S from commenting on everything that he comes across or trying to chat up 2B, the unit he was assigned to to perform maintenance on and assist out in the field. He even tries to chat up his operator who is back at the Bunker in space, but she constantly shuts him down. He's prone to giving his operator compliments but they're seen as flattery, even if they're genuine, which is something that disappoints him. 2B is even more of a target for 9S' affections, which only grow over the course of the game. While she starts off cold toward him and does her best to keep herself distant from him it doesn't really end up working.

It's safe to say that 9S really, really cares about, if not loves 2B, but not exactly in a conventional sense. 9S cares about 2B more than anything else, even himself, considering her as something akin to 'family' even though family is a foreign concept to an android. At the same time his fondness for her has an undertone to it of what can be seen as a crush, his comments to her sometimes flirtatious without him entirely realizing it. He always ensures to upload her consciousness and memory data to the Bunker before his own, puts himself in danger for her, defies orders and will go against command even, if need be, to support her. 9S goes so far in his dedication to 2B that when she is killed his mental stability deteriorates to the point of insanity, as he vows to kill all machine lifeforms, android A2 and wipe out anything that stands in his way. There's also a dark side to his feelings, the side that has him wanting to kill 2B, even though he's unable to admit it, since it is she who is tasked to kill him over and over and over whenever he finds out too much. Basically, 9S' feelings toward 2B are a hot mess.

It's clear from his commentary that he's not like other androids and perhaps feels a bit too much. Unlike any of the other androids in the game, 9S has a nickname, one he tries to get 2B to call him, saying that those who are close to him call him 'Nines'. He's insistent on trying to get her to call him by his nickname, but what is perhaps more interesting about him having a nickname is that it further gives him a sense of individuality and separates him from the rest of the units who are his model type. He isn't just a scanner model - he's 'Nines'. He's eccentric in his tastes, stating he likes taking baths (something unnecessary for androids) because they FEEL good. He also comments on the weather when giving reports to command, despite the information being unnecessary filler and a desperate attempt at conversation. It's evident right from the very start of the game 9S is a somewhat lonely but friendly individual who seeks companionship, which is why he is so fixated on 2B after being assigned to her.

He hates machines, even before 2B's death, seeing himself as above them as an android, the enemy and the 'other'. Even though they begin to show signs of consciousness it takes 9S awhile before he will admit there may be some reason to what the machines are saying as he and 2B slaughter them. Despite finding a village of machines who are peaceful and wish to simply live out their existences without any trouble, it takes 9S awhile to buy into the idea that Pascal and his villagers aren't threats. Even then he keeps them categorized in his mind as exceptions to the rule rather than the norm.

It could be argued that out of all the characters in the game, 9S is perhaps the most human. His range of emotions spans a wide spectrum of love to hate, both feelings entangled in the overall arching emotion of grief. It's grief born of love for 2B that causes 9S to mourn her with hatred and anger driving each and every one of his actions following her death. He's flawed certainly but in a game where humanity is extinct it's through 9S' emotions that the player is able to forget he's an android and isn't human himself.

CRAU:

Duplicity hadn't been kind to 9S the half year or so he stayed there. While initially he was over the moon at having humans all around him and getting to experience various facets of human culture, over time the android found himself souring on humanity as a whole. While he became close to A2 and 6O he began to distrust humans and feel bitter at how he was judged for his lack of functioning parts and how he was treated in general. Duplicity was a place that had a very heavy emphasis on meeting a sex quota and while 9S managed to figure things out without modifying himself it left him feeling inadequate and uncomfortable with himself compared to other humans. Despite all of this he remains his usual curious self and over the course of time he spent in Duplicity he came to love watching the Food Network and nature documentaries. He also has a pet roomba by the name of Pascal that he modified to possess simple AI because he was lonely and wanted something to talk to. Yeah.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

- 9S is not an offensive YoRHa model, meaning he wasn't created to fight. Even so, he's still able to wield weapons (swords, spears etc.) although his main method of attack is via hacking.

- When 9S fights he does not physically wield said weapon in his hands. Instead he chooses to levitate and throw it. Because that's cooler, I guess.

- 9S has a self-detonation system which is activated via his black box. He's not exactly keen to use such a means of attack unless he has no other choice, since, well, it's basically suicide.

- 9S' ability to hack into various machines and electronic interfaces is incredible. There seems to be no limit on his ability to do so when it comes to the type of machine/interface he can attempt to hack into. That doesn't mean he is always successful. When he is successful however, we see 9S able to take control of machines and control them remotely, access servers to gain information and upload his own data/code to name a few things. Of course I wouldn't have him be capable of hacking into anything important without mod permission, but I would imagine that being able to mess around with things like arcade machines and small things like that would be okay. HE IS NOSY IT IS A PROBLEM GOMEN...

INVENTORY:

- His clothing, boots & tactical HUD visor.
- His sword.
- His little pack that he wears. Probably what is inside are a few basic recovery items/repair items.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis
