I'm trying something new today.

I'll be waiting for you.

[It's a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, but 2B has chosen a table outside for them to meet up at. She's got her visor on as usual, but the lunar tear is tucked behind one ear and there's a small black box resting by her hand. Almost nervously her fingers brush the side like she's trying to make sure it's still there, hasn't gotten knocked off the table somehow, and when she finally catches sight of 9S her hand covers it fully like she's trying to hide it from his view.

She didn't claim to be good at surprises, okay.]

You made good time.

[personal profile] historyrepeating 2019-01-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
No.

[It's a poor reply, but there are a lot of things 2B isn't good at and speaking honestly about her feelings is one of them. She does better when she shows them, when she puts it into action instead, and that's why instead of drawing all of this out she pushes the box over the table to him.]

This is for you. [A stilted pause, and then she adds,] I got it for you.

[They may not have human hearts, but they have components that are close enough and hers fill with warmth just from watching his reaction. He looks so pleased, unbelievably happy, and she smiles softly while he's distracted enough by the box to miss it.

It's there and gone, and by the time he looks up she's schooled her features back to the usual passive expression.]

It's yours. You can do whatever you want with it.

[Inside, because of course he's going to open it, he'll find a slender silver charm bracelet with only one charm on it, a small bird painted in a pale blue color.]

[There's a certain kind of calmness that settles over her while she watches him, observes his reaction and watches with a sense of pleasure as he's quick to put the bracelet on. Maybe she should have done that for him, she thinks, but he gets to it so fast it's out of her control before she even has the option to try.]

It called a charm bracelet. You can collect other things to attach to it and make it something no one else has.

[She extends her arm to him so that he can see her wrist, the flash of silver there that matches the bracelet she's given him, but hers is empty.]

[It might be impulsive, but he's not wrong.]

I was going to ask if you'd help me pick one.

[And then, in a moment of self-doubt, she looks down and away from him.]

I got one for A2 as well. Something we can all have to feel... connected, without the Bunker. You'll have to pick a charm for hers too.

I wasn't sure if she would accept it.

[Not because it's from her, but because she wasn't really sure how A2 would take a replacement for the Bunker being suggested. She knows the other android has no desire to be tied to their organization and, as much as she can without going against her own programming, she understands.

Doesn't really approve, but tries to let it go.

So her intention had been to give her the blank, let her choose, but maybe if 9S is in on it it will go better.]

The shop I got them from is nearby if you'd like to go now.

I'll keep that in mind.

[There's a dry sort of humor to her tone, understated and barely there, the kind of thing only 9S or 6O could ever hope to pick up on, but it's not something 2B is actively aware of as she gets to her feet and pushes her chair in.

Vaguely, she's disappointed in herself. She had intended to share coffee and some sort of pastry with 9S on this outing, but the gift had come too soon.

Next time, she will wait. The food will come first, she will let him enjoy that, and then the gift.

Another charm, she thinks. Something symbolic like the bird is, a symbol of flight and freedom. Maybe a cake, since he likes them?

She isn't good at this.]

You don't have to keep the box. It was just the container.

[There isn't anything special about it after all, but even as she's about to chide him for keeping unimportant items that only take up space and collect dust she can't help thinking that that's just one more thing that makes 9S who he is. He sees the value in things when she doesn't, sees the purpose of them when she overlooks it.

It's why they're such a good team.

As they walk side by side she has the urge to reach out and hold his hand, and... well, why not? They've been intimate now. She's promised to do better, try to be honest with him. She should hold herself to that promise.

So she tries. Her hand moves out and her fingertips brush his, but that's all it is. A brush, an offer. An attempt.

Not good enough. Frustratingly so.]

I'm just glad we get to see it together.

[And she tries again, and this time she pushes her fear and her doubt as far away as she can and just links their fingers together.

#winning.]

[Even now 2B feels most comfortable with her visor on when they're in public, but if she knew 9S wanted to look into her eyes...

Well, she'd take it off. Just for now, just while it was only the two of them, but she'd take it off. His hand is warm in hers even with their gloves keeping them from skin to skin contact and she doesn't let go, resolutely holding on with no intention of letting him go any time soon.]

Of icing?

[She's at least kind enough to not draw attention to the stutter, choosing instead to look upwards at the eaves of the nearby buildings.]

Like on a cake?

[He may be dreading this. Slowly her head turns so she can look at him, but with her visor on he won't see her raised eyebrows as she tries to take that in.

He ate icing on its own. Out of a bowl.

Why does that sound exactly like something he would do?]

You're lucky icing is safer than mackerel. That's a lot to eat all at once.

[Does that amount of sugar just burn off, or did he feel the effects? Did it make him sick? Did he crash after the sugar high?]

Still good for what?
