APPLICATION FOR DUPLICITY
« « « OBSESSIVE » » »
Name: Door: DOOR PASS: SUBMISSIVE Canon: NieR: Automata Canon Point: Ending B Age: Literally 3 but is mentally and physically of age (18); gotta love being an android. Appearance: Here. History: Here. Personality: 9S is a YoRHa scanner type model android whose job is to collect intel and do reconnaissance. He was programmed to have a curious and eager personality, which has developed somewhat outside the norm of his fellow scanner units. 9S is chipper, kind, polite and is thirsty for knowledge, which leads him to stick his nose places he ought not to. He's too smart for his own good, quite literally, which the player finds out later on in the game. His specific scanner model is so effective that YoRHa has to eliminate them (including 9S) over and over when they find out too much. (AKA everything is a sham and their mission is effectively pointless.) Emotions are prohibited but that doesn't stop 9S from commenting on everything that he comes across or trying to chat up 2B, the unit he was assigned to to perform maintenance on and assist out in the field. He even tries to chat up his operator who is back at the Bunker in space, but she constantly shuts him down. He's prone to giving his operator compliments but they're seen as flattery, even if they're genuine, which is something that disappoints him. 2B is even more of a target for 9S' affections, which only grow over the course of the game. While she starts off cold toward him and does her best to keep herself distant from him it doesn't really end up working. It's safe to say that 9S really, really cares about, if not loves 2B, but not exactly in a conventional sense. 9S cares about 2B more than anything else, even himself, considering her as something akin to 'family' even though family is a foreign concept to an android. At the same time his fondness for her has an undertone to it of what can be seen as a crush, his comments to her sometimes flirtatious without him entirely realizing it. He always ensures to upload her consciousness and memory data to the Bunker before his own, puts himself in danger for her, defies orders and will go against command even, if need be, to support her. 9S goes so far in his dedication to 2B that when she is killed his mental stability deteriorates to the point of insanity, as he vows to kill all machine lifeforms, android A2 and wipe out anything that stands in his way. There's also a dark side to his feelings, the side that has him wanting to kill 2B, even though he's unable to admit it, since it is she who is tasked to kill him over and over and over whenever he finds out too much. Basically, 9S' feelings toward 2B are a hot mess. It's clear from his commentary that he's not like other androids and perhaps feels a bit too much. Unlike any of the other androids in the game, 9S has a nickname, one he tries to get 2B to call him, saying that those who are close to him call him 'Nines'. He's insistent on trying to get her to call him by his nickname, but what is perhaps more interesting about him having a nickname is that it further gives him a sense of individuality and separates him from the rest of the units who are his model type. He isn't just a scanner model - he's 'Nines'. He's eccentric in his tastes, stating he likes taking baths (something unnecessary for androids) because they FEEL good. He also comments on the weather when giving reports to command, despite the information being unnecessary filler and a desperate attempt at conversation. It's evident right from the very start of the game 9S is a somewhat lonely but friendly individual who seeks companionship, which is why he is so fixated on 2B after being assigned to her. He hates machines, even before 2B's death, seeing himself as above them as an android, the enemy and the 'other'. Even though they begin to show signs of consciousness it takes 9S awhile before he will admit there may be some reason to what the machines are saying as he and 2B slaughter them. Despite finding a village of machines who are peaceful and wish to simply live out their existences without any trouble, it takes 9S awhile to buy into the idea that Pascal and his villagers aren't threats. Even then he keeps them categorized in his mind as exceptions to the rule rather than the norm. It could be argued that out of all the characters in the game, 9S is perhaps the most human. His range of emotions spans a wide spectrum of love to hate, both feelings entangled in the overall arching emotion of grief. It's grief born of love for 2B that causes 9S to mourn her with hatred and anger driving each and every one of his actions following her death. He's flawed certainly but in a game where humanity is extinct it's through 9S' emotions that the player is able to forget he's an android and isn't human himself. POSITIVE TRAIT: EAGERNESS Probably one of 9S' best positive traits is just how keen he is. Whether it's carrying out whatever duty he's been assigned or pursuing knowledge, he's eager to not only please but to learn as much as he can. Everything he does is done with unbridled passion and he gets satisfaction in doing a job well done. Praise is a high motivator in his case and as his Operator states, giving 9S something 'new' to work on or direct his attention toward usually ends up with good results. He's hardworking and always willing to go the extra mile, even if he doesn't need to. NEGATIVE TRAIT: CURIOUS While one may think that curiosity would be a positive trait, in 9S' case it's a detriment. As a Scanner model he's been programmed to be overwhelmingly curious, and that in turn leads him to stick his nose into places he shouldn't. The phrase curiosity killed the cat is perhaps the most fitting way to describe his plight, for every time he accesses classified information he shouldn't or finds out secrets in game a bounty is put on his head that is carried out. He's quite literally killed and has his memories reset when he learns too much, and this happens numerous times. He can't help himself - once something has his attention he's compelled to investigate or learn more about it, even if it means he might die in the pursuit of knowledge. NEGATIVE TRAIT: OBSESSIVE 9S is obsessive. Whether it's obsessing over 2B or gathering knowledge, once he's got his mind set on something there's little one can do to deter him. This obsessive nature can be seen in the fixations he has with gathering knowledge about various things, or even carrying out testing. He can become so absorbed in a task he's doing that he may not notice others around him, which does happen on occasion when he's in the Bunker. Hours can pass and he won't notice until it's pointed out to him. Obsession can also turn unhealthy, which it does when in the latter part of the game 9S becomes absolutely consumed with the need to enact revenge for 2B against A2 and the rest of the machines. Reason doesn't reach him anymore, not even his Pod can break through to him. To put it simply, if 9S ends up with a grudge he won't let it go. Ever. NEGATIVE TRAIT: PRIDEFUL 9S is proud to be a YoRHa Scanner but this pride also causes him to be quite arrogant. To him, anything that isn't human or an android is beneath him. Machines? Eh, they're just making sounds and saying random human words. They don't have souls and feel, and even when confronted with machines that DO seem to have feelings and emotions he's still reluctant to admit outright that they might be more similar to androids than he first thought. Organic living things are even further beneath him, and while they deserve to be protected for conservation reasons, they don't feel or think very much. Powers and Abilities: - 9S is not an offensive YoRHa model, meaning he wasn't created to fight. Even so, he's still able to wield weapons (swords, spears etc.) although his main method of attack is via hacking. - When 9S fights he does not physically wield said weapon in his hands. Instead he chooses to levitate and throw it. Because that's cooler, I guess. - 9S has a self-detonation system which is activated via his black box. He's not exactly keen to use such a means of attack unless he has no other choice, since, well, it's basically suicide. With no means of backing up his data he would turn off his self-detonation system. - 9S' ability to hack into various machines and electronic interfaces is incredible. There seems to be no limit on his ability to do so when it comes to the type of machine/interface he can attempt to hack into. That doesn't mean he is always successful. When he is successful however, we see 9S able to take control of machines and control them remotely, access servers to gain information and upload his own data/code to name a few things. Of course I wouldn't have him be capable of hacking into anything important without mod permission (or other android characters without their player's permission), but I would imagine that being able to mess around with things like arcade machines and small things like that would be okay. HE IS NOSY IT IS A PROBLEM... Inventory: - His sword. - His little pack that he wears. - A blue ribbon/bow. Samples: Top Level Thread w/ A2 NETWORK SAMPLE Hello. I'm YoRHa No.9 Type S - 9S for short. I'm an Android life form and before anyone asks, no I'm not a "robot". I've come to realize that there are a lot of humans here so I want to know just how many there might be. It's kind of my job to collect intel and information so if you've got a moment to spare and you're not, uh, busy procreating, I'd appreciate it if people could fill out a short survey. Thanks in advance. DATA COLLECTION SURVEY - 001 ↬ Are you an Organic or Inorganic life form? O - Organic | I - Inorganic ↬ If YES to Organic, are you Human?
